Store Interior

Hi Friends of Turtle Town,

Summer is definitely here and we are happy to greet all our friends as they return to the lakes area.

As I am writing this I hear the mournful wail of the loon and I am hoping their two babies are okay. We had quite the rain event this June that caused the bog at the south end of Lake Margaret to break off and huge pieces of it (as big as small islands) went floating down the lake and through the Bar Harbor Channel and out into Upper Gull and Gull itself. One such chunk of bog was carrying a pair of loons from the south end of the lake.

When you come into the store this summer I hope you will notice some very fun additions. We are now carrying Playmobil! Playmobil is a line of beautifully designed toys to help children with their pretend play. We’ve also added a craft line for kids as well as a full line of Schylling cars and trucks.

For the adults I have added a wonderful line of nostalgic linens: dish towels, pillow covers, tablecloths and even a chenille throw. These fabulous designs harken back to the fifties and sixties, and make wonderful hostess gifts.

As the ereaders take a chunk out of the paperback business, I am looking for ways to bring new business into the store. Those of you with Ipads or Nooks or other ereading devices can download books from us. Just go to our website and hit the button “Shop Online.” I hope even those of you with ereaders will stop in to see what’s new.

And don’t forget, we have story time every Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

Hi Friends of Turtle Town,

Just a reminder that we’re now open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. We continue to be open all other days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those hours will lengthen as we move closer to summer.

Turtle Town is happy to announce we are participating in World Book Night to be held April 23. Started last year in the UK and Ireland, World Book Night is a grass roots event to get books into the hands of adults who may not have access to books or are reluctant readers. Generous authors, publishers, and book manufacturers have made 30 top titles available in a specially published format. Volunteer book givers chose their favorite title and will receive twenty copies of that title to give away on April 23 at a secret location known only to them. Turtle Town is holding a reception for these volunteers Tuesday evening.

The goal for April 23 is to give half a million books away in 6,000 towns and cities across America. What a wonderful way to spread the love of books and reading!

Hi Friends of Turtle Town,

I hope you are enjoying this springlike weather. Yesterday we left the store in capable hands and went up to Crosslake to play golf! It’s already remarkable that we can play golf in Northern Minnesota on MARCH 17, but even more remarkable, we were playing golf while listening to marching bands from the St. Patrick’s Day Parade! After that experience, our friend Ron said, “I can’t imagine playing golf without a trumpet in my backswing!”

Last night was Bar Harbor’s soft reopening and what an event that was. The inside of the structure has been completely redone, and it is stunning! Our group sampled several of the appetizers, soups, salads and entrees, and all the bites were tasty! Congratulations to John and Becky Allen, the construction crew and staff for making Bar Harbor a terrific destination for the Brainerd Lakes Area and beyond.

And because this page is called “What’s New,” I do have to say that we are receiving new stock almost daily. As promised, we are adding lots of new toys, and just wait until you see the new tricycle in our window! Grandmas and Grandpas, loosen up those pocket books! We’ve also added a line of vintage knockoff linens: dishtowels picturing canoers of another era, for example, and sock monkey tablecloths. We also have linen birthday banners that can be reused time and again and look darling! The dishtowels would make an excellent hostess gift for any cabin owner. Come in and let us show you what’s new!

Welcome fisher people to the Brainerd Lakes Area! Today more than 3,000 fisher people are expected on Booming Out Bay on Gull Lake for the Fishing Extravaganza! It was postponed from January because of lack of ice but it’s plenty cold today! Good Luck, and thanks for supporting our local charities!

Next Friday and Saturday, on the 17th and 18th of February is the Nisswa Jubilee. This is a fun weekend with a parade, snow carving, and several other fun events. Go to Nisswa.com and click on events. We will have story time at 10:30 in the morning. We look forward to seeing all the little ones!

Looking for a good book? Vince Flynn’s greatly anticipated Killshot was released last Tuesday, and we also have Once Upon a Secret, that stunning story of JFK’s 18-month affair with a White House Intern.

Turtle Town Books and Gifts (aka Doug and Mary) are so excited to offer our customers an easy way to communicate with you and enable you to shop on line. For the first time today, you can click on “SHOP” and peruse thousands of titles available via several formats, including paper copies and ebooks.
